January 3rd, 2011

Mind maps are diagrammatic representations of concepts, new ideas, jobs and other associated content linked along with a keyword or core idea. The main keyword is either written or drawn at the centre of the mind map around which we can arrange the related keywords, which depends on the learner priority.

They help us in visualizing the ideas innovatively and it definitely has lot of applications in our day to day life. Some of the examples applications of mind map includes, application in art and creative drawing, application of writer to avoid writer’s block which is caused by sequential thinking, in education to accelerate the process of learning, for organization problem solving and decision making, for making trip plans on vacation, for describing the biography of famous people like “Shakespeare”, for summarizing the key points in an interview or seminar, for students in exam preparation. Apart from these, there are lots of features in mind maps, which make it a tool for creative thinking.

All we need to do for creating mind maps is following a very simple procedure which can give us maximum results. We should always have a balance between the usage of colors and words. We should start always at the page centre where the core idea is written which will then be followed by other words written around the page. We should make the core idea or central keyword as a powerful image and we should always use pictures and symbols rather than written keywords. We should always make note of the important ideas and facts on the line.

Whatever we write or draw in the page should make a strong impact in our mind. We should always try creating 3D images since they have positive impressions on our brain and make it easy to remember. We should be ingenious and get involved completely so that it can be a fun learning experience. By following these simple steps we can create a good mind map.
